I hope my girls don't mind if I post something here. I realized that a post I put on my blog fits the description of THIS blog. Maybe by posting it here, it may help someone out.
I admit that I am happy to shop at Thrift Stores because I look for sundresses! I don't wear them-- I make them into skirts. I have done this several times with several different styles of sundresses.
For one, I like my skirts a certain length. I can't believe I said that-- I sound like my grandmother! Finding a skirt just that length is difficult. Just below the knee but not to the ankles... I'm sooooo picky!
A sundress can be the perfect solution. Moving the bodice to the waist usually brings the hem to that perfect spot!
Here's the link to the tutorial on converting one type of sundress to a skirt (and the length was perfect for me!) Sundress to skirt conversion
Sundresses that are made with the smocked elastic gathers at the bodice are the easiest conversion! You just cut off the Spaghetti straps and move the elastic to your waist!
Here's an example of a Spaghetti Strap sundress: Spaghetti Strap Sundress
If the smocked elastic sundress has cups (is there a better word?) on the bodice, above the smocking, just cut them off! Pull it down to the waist and head out into the heat looking hot! (Oh, now I am cracking myself up.) Unless you plan on tucking a shirt in, the raw cut edges won't be seen. Serge them if it bothers you, or put a tidy small hem there.
Here's an example of one like this: Sundress with cups
Thrift Stores generally are air-conditioned fun places to beat the heat. Now you can look for sundresses to make into skirts! And feel virtuous in doing so.
